5 Signs Your Commercial Fridge Needs Servicing

A commercial fridge failure doesn't just cost the repair bill β€” it costs stock, service downtime, and potentially a health inspection fail. Most breakdowns don't happen suddenly. Here are five warning signs.

1. Temperature Fluctuations

If your fridge can't hold a consistent temperature β€” or runs warmer than the set point β€” the compressor, thermostat, or door seals may be failing. Food safety requires 5Β°C or below.

Check first: Door seals (gaskets). Cracked or loose seals let cold air escape. Gasket replacement is cheap and we carry spares for SKOPE and Williams units.

2. Excessive Condensation or Ice Build-Up

Moisture on the outside, water pooling at the base, or frost inside are all signs of seal or defrost system problems. Ice on evaporator coils restricts airflow and forces the compressor to run longer.

Check first: Defrost drain. A blocked drain causes water to refreeze inside. A simple drain clean during scheduled maintenance prevents this entirely.

3. Unusual Noises

New rattling, clicking, buzzing or humming usually means a fan motor issue, failing compressor, or loose components. Compressor replacement is the most expensive fridge repair β€” don't ignore new sounds.

Check first: Condenser fan. Clogged with dust and grease (common in kitchens), it overworks the compressor. A 15-minute condenser clean done quarterly prevents this.

4. Higher Energy Bills

Power bill creeping up without new equipment? Your fridge is working harder than it should. Dirty coils, worn seals, and failing compressors increase consumption. A fridge running 30% harder uses 30% more electricity β€” that adds up fast.

Check first: Condenser coils. If caked in dust and kitchen grease, the unit can't dissipate heat. This is the #1 preventable cause of commercial fridge failure.

5. The Unit Is Over 8 Years Old and Never Serviced

Commercial refrigeration lasts 10–15 years with proper maintenance. Without it, expect 6–8 years before a major failure. A preventative maintenance visit covers condenser cleaning, gasket inspection, temperature calibration, drain clearing, and a full system check β€” a fraction of an emergency callout cost.
